Let's start by understanding commissions on new books. Many student associations charge a 6% commission on the sale of new books. This percentage may vary among associations, but 6% is the average.
Why commission?
This commission helps cover expenses related to reselling books. Most of the money earned from the commission goes towards maintaining and improving the website, as well as rewarding volunteers who dedicate significant hours to the student association. The remaining funds may be used to support various events, organized by the association, throughout the year. It's important to note that no individual profits from working in the association—every bit of income goes back into its functioning.
In essence, the commission compensates for expenses and ensures the association operates smoothly, allowing students to efficiently access their study materials.
When we suggest an association to set up a 2nd hand system, the problem for most student associations is that second-hand sales may generate less income compared to first-hand sales, potentially impacting their budgets.
As they rely on this income for their functioning, we propose setting up a second-hand system with a commission. This way, the sale of second-hand books wouldn't create a budget deficit. Like the first-hand system, this commission funds website development and maintenance, volunteer rewards, and other association events.
Despite the commission, second-hand books remain the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for students. Keep this in mind!
For student associations, it's crucial that they have some benefit in running a second-hand system. They invest a significant amount of time and take certain risks when setting up second hand. To keep second-hand viable for them, we strongly advocate for a commission.
This compensation motivates associations to optimize the system and boost sales. Without it, there's less incentive for them to make it work efficiently.
Out of all student associations, only a few were brave enough to invest time and energy in a second-hand system. We don’t blame any association for not participating. It makes sense that not all of them can make time for a pilot project. Let’s keep grateful towards them for all the time they spent to keep studying easier and joyful!
But, if your association is one of those associations who is participating in the second hand challenge, we think you should be even more grateful for their extra efforts. They are working to provide you with more affordable textbooks and contribute to the sustainability of your campus.

Waarom commissies?
Deze commissie helpt de kosten te dekken die gepaard gaan met de herverkoop van boeken. Het grootste deel van het geld, dat verdiend wordt met de commissies, gaat naar het onderhouden en verbeteren van de website en het belonen van vrijwilligers die zich urenlang inzetten voor de studentenvereniging. Het resterende geld kan worden gebruikt om verschillende evenementen te ondersteunen die door de vereniging worden georganiseerd. Geen enkel individu geniet van extra profijt - al het inkomen gaat terug naar de het functioneren van de vereniging.
In wezen compenseert de commissie de onkosten en zorgt ervoor dat de vereniging soepel functioneert, zodat studenten effici ̈ent toegang hebben tot hun studiemateriaal.
Wanneer een vereniging wordt voorgesteld om een 2e-handssysteem op te zetten, is het grootste probleem voor de meeste studentenverenigingen dat de verkoop van 2e-handsartikelen minder inkomsten genereert dan de verkoop van 1e-handsartikelen, wat een impact kan hebben op hun budget
Omdat ze voor hun functioneren afhankelijk zijn van deze inkomsten, stellen we voor om een tweede- handssysteem op te zetten met een commissie. Op deze manier zou de verkoop van tweedehands boeken geen begrotingstekort veroorzaken. Net als het eerste-handssysteem financiert deze commissie de ontwikkeling en het onderhoud van de website, vrijwilligersbeloningen en andere verenigingsactiviteiten.
Ondanks de commissie blijven tweedehands boeken de meest kosteneffectieve en milieuvriendelijke optie voor studenten. Houd dit in gedachten!
Voor studentenverenigingen is het cruciaal dat ze enig voordeel hebben aan een tweedehands systeem. Ze investeren veel tijd en moeten bepaalde risico’s nemen bij het opzetten van zo’n systeem. Wij pleiten sterk voor een commissie om de verkoop van tweedehands boeken levensvatbaar te houden.
Deze vergoeding motiveert verenigingen om het systeem te optimaliseren en de verkoop te stimuleren. Zonder commissie is er minder stimulans voor hen om het systeem efficiënt te laten werken
Van al de studentenverenigingen zijn er weinig dapper genoeg om tijd en energie te investeren in een tweedehands systeem. We nemen het geen enkele vereniging kwalijk indien ze niet meedoen. Het is logisch dat ze niet allemaal tijd kunnen vrijmaken voor een proefproject. Laten we ze vooral dankbaar blijven voor al de tijd en moeite die ze hebben gestoken om het studeren makkelijker en leuker te maken!
Maar als jouw vereniging één van die verenigingen is die meedoet aan de tweedehandswedstrijd, dan vinden we dat je nog dankbaarder moet zijn voor hun extra inspanningen. Zij zetten zich in om jullie te voorzien van meer betaalbare studieboeken en dragen bij aan de duurzaamheid van jullie campus.
Laat ze een commissie nemen zodat ze kunnen blijven werken aan een goedkopere en duurzamere toekomst voor iedereen!
